Jimmy Owens Wins $20,000 FloRacing Night in America Feature at Volunteer Speedway

Owens holds off Davenport in a close Volunteer Speedway finish

Jimmy Owens turned a front-row start into a win at Volunteer Speedway, edging Jonathan Davenport by inches after 50 laps of the FloRacing Night in America feature. The $20,000-to-win dirt Late Model race on October 22 came down to a late charge from Davenport and a side-by-side run to the finish.

Owens took the lead early, moving from the bottom to the top lane and clearing Chris Madden off turn two. He remained out front through several cautions, but the closing laps brought changing challengers. Madden was second before Davenport moved through the field; with three laps left, Davenport looked inside Owens. At the white flag, he drove deep into turn three, and the pair ran door-to-door off turn four. Owens held on.

Davenport finished second, with Madden third. Hudson O’Neal came home fourth and Bobby Pierce fifth. The result gives the race a clear story: Owens controlled much of the distance, but a late lane change and charge from Davenport made the finish uncertain until the final corner.

How the 50 laps unfolded

Owens led Madden and Benji Hicks after the first green flag. With 44 laps remaining, Davenport passed Brandon Sheppard for sixth shortly before a caution. Another stoppage came at 35 to go when Barrett Lowe spun; Nick Hoffman also encountered trouble and headed to the infield.

At 20 to go, Owens still led, while Hicks had moved into second. Owens kept his car close to the outside wall. He then had to work through heavy traffic, giving Hicks a chance to close the gap. Garrett Alberson’s contact with the wall brought out another caution with 16 laps left.

On the restart, Madden and Hicks ran side-by-side for second. Hicks brushed the wall, allowing Madden to take the position, while Davenport advanced to third. Madden began closing on Owens with six to go, but Devin Moran slowed with an issue at five to go, setting up another restart.

Davenport used the middle lane to take second after the green flag. He then pressed Owens inside over the final laps, reaching the leader’s door as the race reached its last circuit. Owens’s narrow victory capped a feature shaped by cautions, traffic and shifting lines around the 4/10-mile track.
