Giovanni Scelzi Wins High Limit Racing Opener at Texas Motor Speedway
Scelzi takes a late lead from Rico Abreu to win the 25-lap opener, with Tyler Courtney finishing second on championship weekend.

Scelzi’s late charge decides the Texas opener
Giovanni Scelzi opened High Limit Racing’s championship weekend with a win at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, taking the lead from Rico Abreu with eight laps remaining and holding on through a close fight in traffic. Tyler Courtney passed Abreu for second with two laps left, leaving Abreu third in the 25-lap feature.
The opening night’s A Feature paid $10,000 to win. Tanner Holmes and Daison Pursley started on the front row, while Scelzi began seventh. Holmes led early after getting away well on the bottom. Abreu moved past Pursley for second, then challenged Holmes before making his move for the lead with 13 laps to go, taking advantage of a bobble off turn two.
Scelzi worked forward and took second with 10 laps left. Two laps later, he slid past Abreu into turn one. The lead changed hands again as the pair traded sliders while negotiating lap traffic; Scelzi came out ahead. Courtney then made his pass on Abreu late in the race. Scelzi’s victory put him ahead of the two drivers who had started in front of him, while Holmes finished eighth and Pursley fifth.
How the field was set
Rico Abreu topped Group A qualifying with a two-lap time of 13.151 seconds. Pursley was next at 13.167, followed by Holmes at 13.228. In Group B, Scelzi was quickest at 13.124 seconds, ahead of Tanner Thorson at 13.174 and Justin Peck at 13.225. Those results put Scelzi among the fastest qualifiers, though he started the feature seventh after the Dash.
Holmes won the seven-lap Dash from the front, with Pursley second and Abreu third. Scelzi finished seventh in that race. Four eight-lap heats went to Holmes, Brady Bacon, Kasey Kahne and Brenham Crouch. Peck won the 12-lap B Feature, followed by Ashton Torgerson and Rees Moran.
In practice, Peck set the fastest listed Hot Laps time at 13.316 seconds. Roger Crockett was second at 13.353, and Courtney third at 13.375. Abreu ranked ninth at 13.499, Scelzi tenth at 13.505 and Holmes 20th at 13.756. The gap between the practice order and the feature result reflects how much changed over qualifying, preliminary races and the 25-lap main event.
