Audi Profits Fall Sharply as Cost Cuts and 2026 Models Aim to Restore Margins

Audi’s revenue and operating profit fell, with third-quarter profit down 94%. Cost cuts and new models, including the Q7 and A2 e-tron, are meant to help.

Audi Profits Fall Sharply as Cost Cuts and 2026 Models Aim to Restore Margins
The figures point to a sharp squeeze at Audi: revenue and operating profit both fell in the first nine months of 2026, and the third quarter was especially weak. Audi is responding with cost cuts and a push to improve efficiency across its sites, while preparing a new wave of models for 2026. Whether that can restore margins quickly is an open question.

A few days ago, Audi chief executive Gernot Döllner drew attention with an appearance alongside U.S. President Donald Trump. That episode has not made the company’s immediate outlook any calmer: economic headwinds through the first nine months of 2026 have left a clear mark on its accounts.

Audi’s revenue fell to €42.063 billion from €48.380 billion in the same period a year earlier. Operating profit dropped from €1.555 billion to €1.150 billion, pulling the operating margin down from 3.2% to 2.7%. For a company facing heavy investment and a changing product lineup, that margin decline is the more telling signal.

Audi did generate more net cash flow: €2.439 billion, up from €2.107 billion. But earnings before tax fell to €1.663 billion from €2.520 billion, and net income came in at €1.218 billion.

The third quarter was considerably worse than the nine-month totals suggest. Operating profit plunged about 94% year over year, to €29 million from €468 million. Net profit for the quarter fell by around 87%. Those figures make the recovery challenge immediate, even if one quarter alone can’t explain the full trajectory.

Energy costs, U.S. tariffs and a model transition

Audi is under pressure from several directions. Europe’s rapid shift to electric cars is intensifying competition while the company manages its own transition. Uncertainty linked to the Middle East has pushed energy costs higher, and U.S. tariffs add another burden. The changeover from the entry-level A1 and Q2 to the fully electric A2 e-tron is weighing on results too.

That context helps explain the squeeze, but it doesn’t tell us how much of the damage is temporary or how quickly the new models can help. Audi’s plan pairs restraint on costs with a product offensive; the numbers will show whether both sides of that strategy arrive in time.

New models bring a needed lift

Audi is counting on fresh products to strengthen its position, and the early signs are encouraging. The new [Q7](https://de.motor1.com/reviews/802334/audi-q7-2026-test-preise/) has already launched successfully in Europe. The [Q9](https://de.motor1.com/news/802544/audi-q9-2026-suv-erstkontakt/) is due in early November, and both SUVs are slated for production at Audi’s new U.S. plant. The smaller A2 e-tron adds a different kind of promise. Based on the VW [ID.3 Neo](https://de.motor1.com/reviews/800294/vw-id3-neo-2026-kurztest/), it was unveiled in September and goes on sale in December. Audi says it was developed 21 months faster than comparable previous models; production will take place in Ingolstadt. That speed matters, though the fragment offers no detail on how Audi achieved it.

RS 5 demand is already running ahead

The new [RS 5](https://de.motor1.com/reviews/791180/audi-rs5-2026-drift-test/) gives Audi’s Formula 1 effort a road-going performance counterpart. It’s the brand’s first RS plug-in hybrid, and demand has outpaced the plan: the entire 2026 production run is sold out, with nearly twice as many European orders as expected. The car will be built in Neckarsulm. That’s a strong start, but it’s also a costly bet on a niche model. For now, Audi’s clearest momentum comes from the order book; whether these launches can translate into broader gains is still an open question.
